The Quick Answer

Louisiana requires **15/30/25** liability coverage: $15,000 bodily injury per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Louisiana is an **at-fault state** and does not use PIP. Insurers must **offer uninsured motorist coverage** at your liability limits, and rejecting it or lowering it takes a **signed LDI form**. Under the **2025 reforms**, a driver found **51% or more at fault** can't recover damages, and the **No Pay, No Play** thresholds for uninsured drivers rose to **$100,000**. For most South Louisiana drivers the right policy is liability sized to what you own, UM, and **collision plus comprehensive**, which covers **hurricane flood water**, wind, hail, theft and falling limbs. **Ohlmeyer Insurance** is the **local insurance agency** of **David Ohlmeyer Jr.**, with offices in **Houma** and **Lafayette** and 25+ years in the community. Louisiana Auto Insurance, The Short Version

## The state minimum keeps you legal. It doesn't protect what you've built.

Louisiana requires **15/30/25** liability limits: $15,000 per injured person, $30,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Those numbers run out fast. A single newer pickup can be worth more than the whole $25,000 property damage limit, and one hospital stay after a crash on US-90 or I-10 can blow through $15,000 in days.

Here's the part most drivers miss: Louisiana is an **at-fault state**. If you cause an accident, you are responsible for the damage, and once your policy limits are spent, the rest can come after your savings, your home equity, and even future wages. Your liability limits are the wall between an accident and everything you own.

That's why we don't start with "what's the cheapest policy." We start with what you have to protect, then build the coverage to match: liability limits that fit your assets, **collision and comprehensive** for the cars themselves, uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits, and add-ons like rental and roadside only where they earn their keep. Comprehensive matters more here than almost anywhere. Hurricane season brings wind, falling limbs and flood water, and a heavy afternoon storm can put a street in Houma or Lafayette under water in an hour.

We're an **local insurance agency**, so you get Local coverage with local service from people who live here. [Bundling with your home](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/home-insurance) or renters policy may lower the price further. Discounts vary and are subject to terms, conditions and availability.

Want a ballpark first? Try the [auto rate estimator](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/#estimator), then call [(985) 876-0116](tel:+19858760116) for a real quote. It's one free conversation with our Houma, Raceland or Lafayette office, Monday through Friday, 8 to 5.

## What Louisiana requires. And what we actually recommend.

Louisiana requires **15/30/25 liability** on every registered vehicle. Your insurer must also **offer uninsured motorist coverage** at your liability limits, and turning it down takes a signed form. Louisiana is not a PIP state, so **medical payments coverage** is the optional coverage for your own medical bills.

Required by law

$15k / $30k

### Bodily Injury Liability

Pays for injuries you cause to other people: $15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident. This is the coverage that stands between an at-fault accident and your personal assets, which is why we rarely recommend stopping at the minimum.

Required by law

$25k

### Property Damage Liability

Pays for damage you cause to other people's property: their car, their fence, their storefront. $25,000 doesn't go far if you damage a newer truck or two, so a claim above the limit becomes your bill.

Must be offered

UM

### Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist

Covers you and your passengers when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. Your insurer must offer it at your liability limits. Rejecting it or choosing lower limits requires the signed Louisiana Department of Insurance form. UM property damage is also available, with a $250 deductible.

Strongly recommended

Collision

### Collision Coverage

Repairs or replaces your own car after a crash, regardless of fault. Required by every lender on a financed or leased vehicle, and worth carrying on any car you couldn't comfortably replace out of pocket.

Strongly recommended

Comprehensive

### Comprehensive Coverage

Covers what happens when you're not driving: hurricane and flood water, hail, a limb brought down by storm winds, theft, broken glass, vandalism, fire, and animal strikes. In South Louisiana, this is the quiet workhorse of the policy.

Worth a look

Med Pay

### Medical Payments

Louisiana is not a PIP state. Medical payments coverage pays medical bills for you and your passengers after a crash, no matter who was at fault. If your health coverage is thin or your deductible is high, it can be inexpensive protection.

Not covered

App On

### Rideshare & Delivery Driving

Personal policies generally exclude driving for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and other platforms. Ask us about rideshare coverage availability; where it's offered, an endorsement can close the gap. If the app is on, you need to have this conversation.

### Belongings Inside the Car

A laptop stolen from your back seat is not an auto claim. Personal belongings are covered by your [home](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/home-insurance) or [renters](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/renters-insurance) policy, another reason the bundle works.

Roadside

### Roadside Assistance

Tows, jump starts, flat tires and lockouts, whether you're on LA-1 headed to the coast or stuck on I-10 in the summer heat. Ask about adding roadside coverage to your policy, subject to availability.

Coverage Basics

## How a Louisiana auto policy actually works.

An auto policy is really a stack of separate coverages, each answering a different question. Here's the plain-language version of what each layer does, how Louisiana law shapes it, and how we size it.

### Liability: the coverage that protects everyone else, and you

Liability is the legally required core. Bodily injury liability pays medical bills, lost wages, and legal judgments for people you injure. Property damage liability pays for the cars and property you damage. When a claim exceeds your limits, you're personally on the hook for the rest, and in Louisiana's at-fault system that exposure is real: a judgment can reach savings, home equity, and future income.

Fault can also be split. Under Louisiana's 2025 reforms, a person found **51% or more at fault** can't recover damages at all, and anyone below that has their recovery reduced by their share of fault. Our rule of thumb stays simple: your liability limits should reflect what you have to lose, not what the state minimum requires. Many households look at limits like 100/300/100 or higher, and families with meaningful assets should talk with us about an [umbrella policy](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/umbrella-insurance), which adds a layer of protection over home and auto.

### No Pay, No Play: why every car needs to stay insured

Louisiana's "No Pay, No Play" law limits what an uninsured driver can collect after a crash, even one they didn't cause. Historically, a driver without required coverage couldn't recover the first $15,000 of bodily injury or the first $25,000 of property damage. Those thresholds were **raised to $100,000 under the 2025 reforms**. Letting a policy lapse, even on a second car that mostly sits, can cost far more than the premium. Driving uninsured can also bring license suspension, impoundment, registration revocation and plate cancellation.

The 2025 reforms brought a few other changes worth knowing: no surcharge for a first coverage lapse, no premium increase solely for turning 65, and a ban on using social media or texting while driving.

### Collision and comprehensive: the coverages for your own car

Liability never pays for your own vehicle. That's the job of collision and comprehensive, together often called "full coverage." **Collision** handles crash damage, whether you hit another car, a pole, or a ditch on a dark bayou road. **Comprehensive** handles nearly everything else: flood water, wind, hail, theft, vandalism, glass, fire, falling branches, and animals. In South Louisiana, hurricanes and street flooding are the big ones. Ida in 2021 and Francine in 2024 both left flooded and crushed cars across Terrebonne and Lafourche.

Both come with a deductible, the amount you pay before coverage kicks in, and the deductible is your main pricing lever. Raising it from $500 to $1,000 may trim the premium if you have savings to cover the difference. On an older car worth a few thousand dollars, it's also fair to ask whether collision still earns its premium at all. We'll run that math with you honestly.

### Uninsured motorist: the coverage for other people's bad decisions

You can do everything right and still get hit by someone carrying no insurance, or too little. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage steps into the at-fault driver's shoes and pays for your injuries. Louisiana requires your insurer to offer it at your liability limits, and you have to sign the LDI form to reject it or lower it. Plenty of drivers carry only the 15/30/25 minimum, so we treat UM as essential and match it to your own liability limits. UM property damage, with its $250 deductible, is worth a look too.

### The add-ons: useful, but only where they fit

The remaining pieces are situational, and this is where a real agent earns their keep instead of a checkout page upselling everything:

- **Medical payments** pays medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault. Louisiana doesn't use PIP, so this is the coverage that fills that role.

- **Rental reimbursement** pays for a rental car while yours is in the shop. Cheap, and worth it for anyone who can't be without a car for two weeks, especially after a storm when body shops back up.

- **Roadside assistance** covers tows, jump starts, and lockouts. Skip it if you already have roadside help through another program or your vehicle's warranty.

- **Rideshare coverage** addresses Uber, Lyft, and delivery driving that personal policies generally exclude. Ask us about rideshare coverage availability before the app goes on. Driving for your own company is different again; ask about [business coverage](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/business-insurance).

None of this needs to be memorized. Bring us your declarations page, tell us how you actually use your cars, and we'll walk the stack together, line by line, in plain English.

## Seven honest ways to lower your Louisiana premium. Without gutting your protection.

The two biggest levers are **bundling with home or renters** and an **annual review with our office** to make sure every discount still applies. The rest stack on top. The one move to avoid is cutting liability limits. Discounts vary and are subject to terms, conditions and availability.

1

### Bundle auto with home or renters

A multi-policy discount is one of the most reliable ways to save. Pairing your auto policy with a [home](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/home-insurance) or [renters](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/renters-insurance) policy may lower what you pay, and it puts your whole plan with one local agent who knows the full picture.

2

### Review it with our office once a year

Your life changes faster than your policy does: a new commute, a paid-off car, a teen who made the honor roll, a move from Houma to Thibodaux. Once a year, sit down with David's office (in person in Houma, Raceland or Lafayette, or by phone) and we'll re-check your coverages, deductibles and discounts so the policy still fits.

3

### Raise your deductible, if your savings can cover it

Moving collision and comprehensive deductibles from $500 to $1,000 can lower those line items. The right deductible is the biggest number you could pay tomorrow without wincing.

4

### Drop collision on cars that no longer justify it

When a car's value drops to a few thousand dollars, collision coverage can cost more over a few years than the car would ever pay out. We'll tell you when it's time, even though it lowers your bill with us.

5

### Drive safe, and let a safe-driving program see it

Tickets and at-fault accidents can follow your rate for years. Drive like your premium depends on it, because it does. A safe-driving program can reward good driving habits. Ask whether it's a fit for your household, subject to terms, conditions and availability.

6

### Stack every discount you actually qualify for

Ask about new car, anti-lock brakes, early signing, responsible payer and good student discounts. Discounts are the kind of thing that quietly falls off a policy over the years, so part of your yearly review is making sure every one you qualify for is applied. Discounts vary and are subject to terms, conditions and availability.

7

### Bundle the rest of the garage

The motorcycle, the boat at the camp, the ATV for hunting season: putting them with the same agency as your car and home may add to your multi-policy savings and gives you one number to call when something happens. What doesn't work: quietly cutting liability limits. It saves a few dollars a month and exposes everything you own.

### Want us to run all seven against your current policy?

Bring your declarations page. We'll show you where the savings may be, and where they aren't. No obligation either way.

## Whatever's in the driveway. We quote it.

## Louisiana auto insurance questions. Straight answers.

What is the minimum car insurance required in Louisiana?

Louisiana requires liability coverage of at least **$15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident** for bodily injury, plus **$25,000 for property damage**, written as 15/30/25 (La. R.S. 32:900). Driving without it can mean license suspension, vehicle impoundment, registration revocation and plate cancellation.

That satisfies the law, but $15,000 doesn't go far after a serious injury, and whatever the policy doesn't cover, you can be pursued for personally. If you have a question about Louisiana's insurance rules, the Louisiana Department of Insurance consumer line is 1-800-259-5300.

Is Louisiana a no-fault state?

**No.** Louisiana is an at-fault state, and it doesn't use personal injury protection (PIP). The driver who causes a crash is responsible for the injuries and damage, and their liability coverage pays those claims.

Fault can be shared. Under the 2025 reforms, a person found **51% or more at fault** can't recover damages, and below that, recovery is reduced by their share of fault. That's one reason your own coverages, like collision and medical payments, matter.

Do I have to carry uninsured motorist coverage in Louisiana?

Your insurer must **offer** uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage at the same limits as your liability. To reject it, or to choose lower limits, you have to sign the Louisiana Department of Insurance UM form. UM property damage is also available, with a $250 deductible.

We recommend keeping UM and matching it to your liability limits. Plenty of drivers carry only the 15/30/25 minimum, and some carry nothing at all. UM steps into their shoes and pays for your injuries when they can't.

What is Louisiana's “No Pay, No Play” law?

It limits what an uninsured driver can collect after a crash, even when the other driver was at fault. Historically, a driver without required insurance couldn't recover the first $15,000 of bodily injury or the first $25,000 of property damage.

Those thresholds were **raised to $100,000 under the 2025 reforms**. The takeaway is simple: keep every car on the road insured, every month, because a lapse can cost you far more than the premium.

Does car insurance cover hurricane and flood damage?

**Yes, if your policy includes comprehensive coverage**, minus your deductible. Flood water, wind, hail, falling limbs and debris are comprehensive claims. Storms like Ida in 2021 and Francine in 2024 flooded and damaged cars across Terrebonne and Lafourche. A liability-only policy pays nothing for any of it.

Note the split: your car's flood damage is auto comprehensive. Your home and belongings need a separate [NFIP flood policy](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/flood-insurance), which we can help you with. When a storm is coming, move cars to higher ground early, and never drive into moving water.

What does full coverage actually mean?

Full coverage is industry shorthand, not a legal term. It usually means liability plus **collision** (crash damage to your own car) and **comprehensive** (flood water, wind, hail, theft, vandalism, glass, fire, animals), and in a well-built policy, uninsured motorist coverage too.

Lenders require collision and comprehensive on any financed or leased vehicle. On a car you own outright, whether full coverage still makes sense depends on what the car is worth, and we'll run that math with you honestly.

How can I lower my car insurance in Louisiana?

Start with the discounts you may qualify for: the multi-policy discount for bundling auto with [home](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/home-insurance) or [renters](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/renters-insurance), a safe-driving program, plus new car, anti-lock brakes, early signing, responsible payer and good student discounts. Discounts vary and are subject to terms, conditions and availability.

Then look at your deductible, drop collision on a car that isn't worth much anymore, and sit down with our office once a year so your coverage and discounts still fit. What doesn't work is quietly cutting your liability limits. That saves a few dollars a month and exposes everything you own.

Does my policy cover Uber, Lyft, or DoorDash driving?

Generally **no**. Personal auto policies exclude driving for hire, and the platform's own coverage is thin during the window when your app is on but no ride or delivery is accepted.

Ask us about rideshare coverage availability. Where it's offered, an endorsement can close that gap. If you drive for any app, even occasionally, tell us before you need a claim, not after.
