Why Lafayette

## A local office for Acadiana. Same agency, same approach.

Ohlmeyer Insurance is the agency of David Ohlmeyer Jr., a local insurance agent with 25+ years in the community and a Bachelor of Science from Nicholls State University. The main office is in Houma. The Lafayette office on East Saint Mary Boulevard keeps us close to the families and businesses we serve across Acadiana.

Many Lafayette households have a lot going on at once: a home that's been through a storm or two, two or three cars, maybe a teenager about to start driving or a student renting near campus. Those pieces work best when one agency can see the full picture and build them to fit together.

That's the idea behind **Local coverage, local service.** We explain your options in plain English, help you pick the coverage that fits and stay with you as your needs change. [Meet David](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/about-david-ohlmeyer).

Insuring a Lafayette Home and Family

## What we look at first in Lafayette. Water, wind and the road.

Every household is different, but these are the questions that come up most with Acadiana customers.

### The August 2016 flood and flood coverage

Lafayette flooded heavily in August 2016. Standard home, condo and renters policies don't cover flood, so it needs its own [flood policy](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/flood-insurance). You can buy a government-run NFIP policy through an insurance agent. NFIP limits are $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents, and there's a **30-day waiting period** in most cases. Check your zone instead of assuming. The same goes for [condo](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/condo-insurance) and [renters](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/renters-insurance) policies.

### Laura, Delta and named-storm deductibles

Hurricanes Laura and Delta both affected Acadiana in 2020. South Louisiana [home policies](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/home-insurance) can carry a separate percentage deductible for named storms or hurricanes, for example 2% or 5% of the dwelling limit. Know your number before hurricane season. If you're replacing a roof, the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program offers grants of up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof, and FORTIFIED roofs earn required discounts on the hurricane portion of your premium. Amounts vary by insurer and region. If you can't find coverage elsewhere, Louisiana Citizens is the state's insurer of last resort.

### Insure to rebuild cost, not the sale price

Your dwelling limit should equal what it would cost to rebuild the house today, not the market value or what you paid. We work through the number with you on every home policy, so it doesn't quietly drift below what a rebuild would take.

### Commuters, teen drivers and the umbrella

Louisiana's auto minimum is **15/30/25**: $15,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 of property damage. Your insurer must offer uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits, and turning it down takes a signed UM rejection form. Under the 2025 reforms, the No Pay, No Play threshold was raised to $100,000, and a driver found 51% or more at fault can't recover damages. With daily commutes on I-10, I-49 and US-90, and new drivers joining the policy, the minimum rarely matches what a Lafayette household has at stake. Higher [auto](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/auto-insurance) limits plus an [umbrella policy](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/umbrella-insurance) are worth pricing together.

## Lafayette insurance questions. Straight answers.

Where is your Lafayette office, and when are you open?

Our Lafayette office is at **1019 E Saint Mary Blvd, Lafayette, LA 70503**, near the UL Lafayette campus. We're open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central. Weekend appointments and after-hours appointments are available.

Call [(337) 232-1800](tel:+13372321800). This line doesn't take texts; if you'd rather text, use our Houma line at [(985) 876-0116](tel:+19858760116).

Which areas does the Lafayette office serve?

Lafayette and the surrounding Acadiana towns, including Broussard, Youngsville, Scott, Carencro, Breaux Bridge, New Iberia, Abbeville, Opelousas, Crowley, Maurice and Milton.

Our main office is in [Houma](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/houma/), and our [Raceland](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/raceland/) office is on Highway 1. Together they serve Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.

What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in Louisiana?

Louisiana requires liability limits of at least **15/30/25**: $15,000 for bodily injury per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. Your insurer must offer uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage at your liability limits, and rejecting it or choosing lower limits takes a signed Louisiana Department of Insurance form.

Under the 2025 reforms, the No Pay, No Play threshold was raised to $100,000, and a driver found 51% or more at fault can't recover damages. For most Acadiana households the minimum is too low for what they own, so we'll show you what higher limits and an umbrella may cost.

Do I need flood insurance in Lafayette?

It's worth serious thought. Lafayette flooded heavily in August 2016, and standard home, condo and renters policies exclude flood. You can buy a government-run NFIP flood policy through an insurance agent.

NFIP limits are $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents, and there's a **30-day waiting period** in most cases.

How do hurricane deductibles work on an Acadiana home?

Hurricanes Laura and Delta both affected Acadiana in 2020. South Louisiana home policies can carry a separate percentage deductible for named storms or hurricanes, for example 2% or 5% of the dwelling limit, instead of your regular deductible.

Read your declarations page so you know your number before hurricane season.

Can roommates share a renters insurance policy?

It depends on the policy. Separate policies are often simpler, because a shared policy means a shared limit, a shared claims history and shared liability.

Either way, renters insurance covers your belongings, your personal liability and extra living costs if the place becomes unlivable. We can walk you through both setups.

What is an umbrella policy, and do I need one?

A personal umbrella policy adds an extra layer of liability coverage above your home and auto policies. It pays after those limits are used up on a covered claim.

If you own a home, have savings or retirement accounts, or have a teen driver on the policy, it's worth a look.

Who will I work with at the Lafayette office?

Ohlmeyer Insurance is a **local insurance agency** led by David Ohlmeyer Jr., with offices in Lafayette, Houma and Raceland. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Nicholls State University and has 25+ years in the community.

You get local coverage with local service, and we stay with you as your needs change.
