Life Insurance for South Louisiana Families, The Short Version

## Nobody avoids this because of the price. They avoid it because of the guess.

It's a common story. A young family buys a house in Bayou Cane or Youngsville, knows they should have life insurance, assumes it costs more than they can spare, and files the whole subject under "later." The guess is what stalls the plan. So the first thing we do is replace it with a real quote.

The second guess is the amount, and round numbers fail here. The honest method is addition. What would it take to **pay off the house**, **replace your income** for the years your family needs it, **get the kids through school**, and clear the debts that don't go away with you? For a family with a mortgage and kids, that math often lands well above a round-number guess or the coverage from work.

That first line item, the house, is where many families start. **Mortgage protection** is simply term life insurance sized to what you owe and timed to the years left on the loan. If the worst happens, the benefit goes to your family. They can use it to pay off the mortgage or keep making the payments, and stay in the home.

Down here, a lot of paychecks come from hard work far from home: **offshore and oilfield hitches**, **shipyard crews**, and boats working out of Dulac, Chauvin and Golden Meadow. If your family counts on that check, life insurance is how it keeps coming if you can't. Tell us what you do for a living. Your job is part of the application, and we'd rather walk through it with you upfront.

For most families the answer is **term, sized properly**. **Whole and universal life** have real uses too, and David's office offers all three. We'll explain where each one fits for you, plainly, and we won't dress one up as the other.

## The policies, in plain English. Most families start with the first two.

Term, whole and universal life are available through David's office. Life insurance may be issued by third-party insurance companies. Here is what each one is actually for.

Start here

Term

### Term Life

Covers you for a set number of years and pays if you die during that time. It generally buys the most death benefit per dollar, which is why it fits the mortgage-and-kids years so well. Most families should start here.

For homeowners

Mortgage

### Mortgage Protection

Term life sized to your mortgage balance and timed to the years left on the loan. If you die during the term, your family receives the benefit and can pay off the house or keep making payments. A simple, practical way to help the kids keep their home.

Specific jobs

Whole

### Whole Life

Permanent coverage with a level premium that builds cash value over time. It costs more per dollar of death benefit than term. It earns its place for a lifelong dependent, final expenses or a need that genuinely never ends.

Specific jobs

Universal

### Universal Life

Permanent coverage with more flexibility in how you pay, plus cash value. More moving parts means it needs to be funded and reviewed. Worth it for the right situation, not a default.

For owners

Business

### Business Owners

If the business depends on you, a death can put payroll, loans and the business itself at risk. Life insurance can help the family and the business through it. Your attorney and CPA handle the agreements; we make sure the coverage lines up.

Specific jobs

Final Expense

### Final Expenses

A smaller permanent policy sized to funeral and final costs, which can easily run into the thousands. It keeps that bill off your family in a hard week.

Not a plan

Group

### Your Policy At Work

Group life through work is often well short of what a family needs, and it usually ends when the job does. That matters in contract, offshore and shipyard work, where crews change companies. Take it if it's offered. Just don't mistake it for coverage you own.

Old Forms

### An Outdated Beneficiary

The policy pays whoever is named on it, regardless of what your will says. Marriage, divorce, a new child: each one is a reason to re-check the form. It costs nothing to fix and a lot to ignore.

### Riders & Options

Riders and options vary by policy and availability. Before you sign, ask which ones come with the policy you're considering and what each one actually does. If you're buying term, ask whether it can be converted to permanent coverage later.

### Stop guessing. It takes one conversation.

Tell us who depends on you and what you owe on the house. We'll work out the amount, the type and the actual price. Free, with no obligation at the end.

Getting It Right

## Four decisions, in the order they matter.

Skip the jargon. These are the questions that actually determine whether the policy does its job.

### 1. How much, calculated rather than guessed

Round numbers are a starting point, not an answer. Do it properly by adding up what the money has to accomplish: pay off the **mortgage**, clear the **debts**, replace your **income** for as many years as your family would realistically need, and cover **education** if that is part of your plan. Then subtract what already exists in savings and any coverage through work.

Two things get missed almost every time. **Final expenses** are real money, often several thousand dollars for a funeral. And **a stay-at-home parent needs coverage**, because replacing that work with paid childcare is an immediate, ongoing cost that arrives in the same month as the grief.

### 2. Term versus permanent, honestly

Term is right for most people, most of the time. Your exposure has a shape: it is largest while the mortgage is big and the kids are small, and it shrinks as both do. Term matches that shape and generally costs much less than permanent coverage for the same death benefit.

**Mortgage protection** is the clearest example. Match a term policy to your loan balance and the years left on it. Because the benefit is paid to your beneficiaries rather than the lender, they decide whether to pay off the loan or keep the payments going and use the rest elsewhere.

**Whole and universal life** are legitimate tools with narrower uses: a dependent who will need support for life, money for heirs so they aren't forced to sell something, or a final expense need that never expires. If one of those is you, we'll say so. If none of them are, we'll say that too, and quote you the term policy. For anything touching estates or trusts, talk to your attorney and CPA.

### 3. Replacing a paycheck that comes from offshore, the yard or the water

For many families in Terrebonne, Lafourche and St. Mary parishes and across Acadiana, the income comes from a hitch offshore, an oilfield service job, a shipyard crew or a boat. Families plan around those schedules every day. Life insurance lets them keep planning if the paycheck stops for good.

Size it to the years your family would need that income, and don't lean on coverage through work, which often ends when the contract or the job does. Be straightforward about your occupation on the application. We'll walk you through the questions so there are no surprises, and so the policy you own pays when it should.

### 4. Keep it current

You don't have to buy one round number. Some families **ladder** coverage: a larger policy for the mortgage and kids-at-home years, plus a smaller, longer one for the long tail, so coverage steps down when obligations do. Whatever you buy, re-check the **beneficiaries** after every big life event, and ask about **conversion** on any term policy before the option runs out. We're happy to review it with you whenever life changes.

## Who actually needs this. And how much.

The need has a shape, and the shape changes. Here is where it usually shows up for families in Houma, Lafayette and across South Louisiana.

[Young families

The moment the need is largest and the budget feels smallest. It is also when you are youngest and healthiest. Term, sized to the mortgage, the kids and the years ahead.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote?type=life)

[Homeowners: mortgage payoff

Just closed on a house in Houma, Thibodaux or Youngsville? The mortgage is the largest bill most families carry, and it doesn't care what happened to you. Term life matched to the loan helps keep the family in the home.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote?type=life)

[Stay-at-home parents

No paycheck, enormous economic value. Replacing that work with paid childcare is a real bill that arrives in the worst possible month. One of the most skipped policies there is.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote?type=life)

[Business owners & partners

If the shop, the crew or the restaurant depends on you, a death can put payroll and loans at risk. Life insurance can help the family and the business through it. See our business insurance page for the rest of the plan.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/business-insurance)

[Offshore, shipyard & fishing families

Two weeks out, two weeks home, or long days on the water. If your family runs on that paycheck, coverage you own keeps it coming if you can't, even after a job or contract change.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote?type=life)

[Empty nesters: final expenses

The mortgage is gone and the kids are grown, so the question changes. Covering final expenses and leaving something behind are the usual reasons. A smaller permanent policy may fit.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote?type=life)

## Life insurance questions. Straight answers.

What kinds of life insurance can I get through your office?

Term, whole and universal life are available through David Ohlmeyer Jr.'s office in Houma, Raceland and Lafayette.

Term covers a set number of years and fits most families with a mortgage and kids. Whole and universal life are permanent coverage for needs that don't end. Life insurance may be issued by third-party insurance companies. Coverage is subject to terms, conditions and availability.

How much life insurance do I need?

Add it up instead of guessing a round number.

Count what the money has to do: pay off the mortgage, replace your income for the years your family needs it, fund education, clear debts and cover final expenses. Then subtract savings and any coverage through work. For many families with a mortgage and kids, the honest total is well above what they have at work.

Term or whole life? What should I actually buy?

For most families, term life sized properly. Term generally buys the most protection per dollar during the years someone depends on your income and the mortgage is still large.

Permanent coverage, like whole or universal life, has real uses: a lifelong dependent, money for heirs and final expenses. We'll explain which fits you, and we won't dress one up as the other.

Can life insurance pay off my mortgage?

Yes, if it's sized for it. Mortgage protection is term life insurance sized to your mortgage balance and timed to the years left on your loan.

If you die during the term, the benefit goes to the beneficiaries you choose, not the lender, so your family can pay off the house or keep making the payments and stay in the home. It can sit alongside a larger family policy.

I work offshore or in the oilfield. Can I still get life insurance?

Your job is part of the application, so tell us what you do and where you work.

Offshore, oilfield, shipyard and commercial fishing jobs can come with extra questions about your duties and schedule. We'll walk you through them upfront and tell you what we find. Answer honestly; it protects the claim your family may need someday.

Isn't the life insurance from my job enough?

Treat it as a bonus layer, not a plan. Group coverage is often a fraction of what a family needs, and it typically ends when the job does, whether you quit, get laid off, retire or the contract ends.

Plenty of people change employers more often than they change policies. Coverage you own travels with you.

Can life insurance cover final expenses?

Yes. A smaller permanent policy can be sized to funeral and final costs, so that bill doesn't land on your family.

It's a common reason people call us later in life, after the mortgage is paid and the kids are grown. We'll help you size it to what you actually want covered.

Who should I name as my beneficiary?

Name specific people or a trust, name contingent beneficiaries behind them, and re-check after every major life event: marriage, divorce, a new child, a death in the family.

The policy pays whoever is on the form, regardless of what your will says. For trusts and estate planning, loop in your attorney. We'll make sure the insurance paperwork matches the plan.
