The Quick Answer

A Louisiana motorcycle needs its own policy. **Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies to motorcycles**, the same minimum required of a car, and your auto policy does not cover the bike. Louisiana has a **universal helmet law**: all riders must wear helmets. Louisiana is an **at-fault state** and does not use PIP, so **medical payments** coverage and **uninsured motorist** coverage are what pay for your own injuries. Insurers must offer UM at your liability limits, and turning it down takes a signed LDI form. South Louisiana riders ride **year-round**, so keep **comprehensive** in force for theft, **flood water** and **hurricane damage** instead of cancelling. Round out the policy with **custom parts coverage**, **safety apparel** for your gear, and **guest passenger liability** if anyone rides behind you. **Ohlmeyer Insurance** is the **local insurance agency** of David Ohlmeyer Jr. in **Houma** and **Lafayette**, quoting riders free at **[(985) 876-0116](tel:+19858760116)**.

Louisiana Motorcycle Insurance, The Short Version

## South Louisiana gives riders a twelve-month season. The policy should fit all of it.

Start with what makes riding here good: there's no real off-season. A run down LA-1 along Bayou Lafourche, a crossing of the Atchafalaya Basin on I-10, a Sunday loop out of Lafayette through Breaux Bridge and St. Martin Parish. Then there's the rest of it: summer heat, afternoon thunderstorms that flood a road in minutes, and a hurricane season that runs from June into November. A policy built for that rhythm protects the bike on the road and in the shed.

Now the part that shapes every recommendation on this page. **Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies to motorcycles**, the same as a car, and Louisiana is an **at-fault state**. Your insurer must offer **uninsured motorist coverage** at your liability limits, but plenty of riders sign it away. In a car, a driver with no insurance or bare minimum limits is an annoyance. On a bike, you are the crumple zone, and the driver who turned left in front of you being underinsured turns a bad day into a financial one. That's why **UM** is the first thing we size on a rider policy.

Storms are the other piece. It's tempting to drop to liability-only on a bike that mostly sits, but a parked bike can still be stolen, flooded or crushed, and without **comprehensive** none of that is covered. Ida and Francine both left flooded garages and sheds across the Bayou Region.

The rest is making the policy match the bike you actually ride: ask about **custom parts coverage** above the default, **safety apparel** for the gear, and **guest passenger liability** if anyone rides with you. We're a local insurance agency, so it's local coverage with local service, and bundled with the car and the house, it is often cheaper than riders expect. Discounts vary and are subject to terms, conditions and availability.

## What a rider policy needs. And the three gaps nobody mentions.

The required part is small. The parts that decide whether a bad day ruins you are the ones you choose.

Required by law

15/30/25

### Liability

Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies to motorcycles, on the bike's own policy. Covers what you do to others' bodies and property, plus defense. On a vehicle this exposed, we treat the minimum as the floor for the conversation, not the recommendation.

Must be offered. Keep it.

UM

### Uninsured Motorist

Your insurer must offer it at your liability limits, and rejecting it takes a signed form, so don't sign it away. Plenty of drivers carry only the 15/30/25 minimum, some carry nothing, and on a bike you have no steel around you. This is the coverage that pays when the driver who turned left in front of you cannot.

Strongly recommended

Med Pay

### Medical Payments

Liability pays the other person. Medical payments pays you and your passenger, regardless of fault. Louisiana is not a PIP state, so this is the coverage that fills that role. On two wheels, even a modest get-off can mean an ambulance.

If you'd miss it

Comp & Collision

### Physical Damage

Repairs or replaces the bike. Comprehensive matters more than riders think: motorcycles are easy targets for thieves, and South Louisiana storms bring flood water, wind and falling limbs. Your shed is not coverage, and neither is a cover in the driveway.

June to November

Storm Plan

### Hurricane Season

There's no winter lay-up here, but there is a storm season. Keep comprehensive in force year-round so flood water and wind damage are covered, and have a plan to move the bike to higher ground or a sturdy building before a storm. Don't wait for the forecast cone to make your plan.

Required by law

Helmet

### Universal Helmet Law

Louisiana requires all riders to wear helmets, every ride, in every season. Even in August heat, the helmet stays on. It's also gear worth protecting, which is where safety apparel coverage comes in.

Usually a gap

Your Mods

### Custom Parts & Equipment

Policies often assume a stock bike and limit what they pay for accessories. Exhaust, bars, bags, seat, paint, lighting, engine work. Add up what you have spent past stock, then ask us about raising the limit to match.

Usually a gap

Your Gear

### Safety Apparel

Helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, armor. It is not part of the bike, so the bike's coverage does not replace it. A full kit can run into four figures, and one get-off can destroy all of it at once, in the same crash that bent the frame.

### Guest Passenger Liability

Some rider policies limit or exclude passenger liability, or make it an add-on. The person on the back is the most likely to be badly hurt in your crash. If you ever carry anyone, this line is not optional.

### Is your bike insured as the bike you actually built?

Mods, gear, and the passenger line are the three we find wrong most often. Bring us your declarations page and we will read it with you, free.

The Louisiana Rules That Matter

## Five things that change how a claim goes here.

Louisiana's rules for riders are simple on paper. What you choose on top of them is what decides what a claim pays.

### 1. 15/30/25 applies to your bike too

Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies to motorcycles: $15,000 per injured person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage (La. R.S. 32:900). Riding uninsured can mean license suspension, impoundment, registration revocation and plate cancellation. Questions about the rules themselves? The Louisiana Department of Insurance consumer line is 1-800-259-5300.

### 2. Louisiana is an at-fault state

The rider or driver who causes a crash is responsible for the damage, and their liability coverage pays. Fault can be shared: under the 2025 reforms, a person found 51% or more at fault can't recover damages, and below that, recovery shrinks by their share of fault. And under "No Pay, No Play," an uninsured rider can't collect the first part of their own losses even when the other driver caused the crash. Those thresholds were raised to $100,000 under the 2025 reforms. Keep the bike insured every month.

### 3. UM must be offered. Medical payments is your call.

Insurers must offer **uninsured motorist** coverage at your liability limits, and rejecting it or lowering it takes a signed Louisiana Department of Insurance form. Louisiana doesn't use PIP, so **medical payments** coverage is optional. On a bike, the coverage most likely to pay for your hospital stay is your own UM, stacked with medical payments and your health insurance. We size that stack first.

### 4. Helmets for all riders

Louisiana has a universal helmet law. All riders must wear helmets. Treat the helmet like the rest of your gear: worth protecting, and worth asking whether safety apparel coverage can be added.

### 5. Your auto policy is not helping

A motorcycle is never covered by your car's policy. It needs its own. The upside of doing it properly: bikes often rate cheaper than people expect, and bundling the bike with the [auto](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/auto-insurance) and [home](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/home-insurance) policies may qualify you for a multi-policy discount, subject to terms, conditions and availability. One call, one local agent, the whole garage.

### Let it lapse at some point? Get it back in force today.

A lapse leaves a parked bike exposed to theft and storm damage, and under No Pay, No Play it limits what you can collect if someone hits you. One call to (985) 876-0116 starts fixing it.

## Whatever you ride. However you ride it.

A daily commuter on US-90 and a garage-kept restoration are not the same policy. Tell us which one you are.

[Daily commuters

US-90, LA-24, Ambassador Caffery Parkway or I-10 every day, all year, in the same traffic as everyone else. More exposure, more miles, and UM coverage matters most for you because you are surrounded by the people who cause the crashes.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote)

[Builds & heavily modified bikes

If your bike left stock a long time ago, the default accessory limit is not close. Custom parts and equipment coverage exists exactly for you, and it costs very little.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote)

[Weekend & bayou-road riders

A run down LA-1 toward the Gulf or a loop through Breaux Bridge a few times a month, parked the rest. Keep theft, flood and storm coverage alive on the days it sits, because hurricane season doesn't care how often you ride.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote)

[Riders who carry passengers

Guest passenger liability is limited or excluded more often than riders realize. If anyone ever gets on the back, this gets checked before you ride, not after.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote)

[Classics & collectibles

A vintage bike may be worth more than its depreciated book value. Ask us how your policy would value it before you need to know, and keep the records and photos that prove what it's worth.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote)

[New riders

Highest risk, lowest experience, and one of the best moves available to you is an approved motorcycle safety course. Start with real limits rather than the legal floor.](https://ohlmeyerinsurance.com/quote)

### One call, and it's usually cheaper than you think.

You ride fewer miles than you drive, and it bundles with the car and the house. Tell us about the bike and we'll quote it properly, with the discounts you qualify for. Discounts are subject to terms, conditions and availability.

## Louisiana rider questions. Straight answers.

Is motorcycle insurance required in Louisiana?

Yes. Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies to motorcycles: $15,000 per injured person, $30,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage. Riding uninsured can mean license suspension, impoundment, registration revocation and plate cancellation.

That's the legal floor. On a bike, uninsured motorist and medical payments coverage are the pieces that pay for your injuries, and both deserve a serious look.

Do I have to wear a helmet in Louisiana?

**Yes.** Louisiana has a universal helmet law: all riders must wear helmets, whatever their age or experience.

A good helmet is also part of your gear, and gear isn't automatically covered when the bike is. Ask us about safety apparel coverage so a crash doesn't cost you the helmet, jacket and boots on top of the bike.

Does my auto policy cover my motorcycle?

No.

A motorcycle needs its own policy. Your auto policy does not extend to it. The good news is that bike policies are often cheaper than people expect, and bundling the bike with your auto and home may qualify you for a multi-policy discount. Discounts vary and are subject to terms, conditions and availability.

What happens if an uninsured driver hits me?

Louisiana is an at-fault state, so the other driver's liability coverage should pay. The problem is when they carry no insurance, or only the 15/30/25 minimum, and on a bike you are the crumple zone.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage steps into the at-fault driver's shoes and pays for your injuries. Louisiana requires insurers to offer it at your liability limits, and turning it down or lowering it takes a signed Louisiana Department of Insurance form. On a rider policy, it's the one we size first.

Does liability coverage pay for my own injuries?

No. Liability pays for the people you injure and the property you damage.

Louisiana doesn't use PIP. Your own injuries are covered by medical payments coverage, your health insurance, and, when the other driver is at fault and uninsured or underinsured, your UM coverage. On a bike, building that injury stack deliberately matters more than on any car.

Are my custom parts and accessories covered?

Often only up to a limited amount, and plenty of bikes carry real money in pipes, bars, seats, luggage, chrome and paint.

Ask us whether custom parts and equipment coverage can raise that limit to match reality. Bring the receipts, or at least an honest list, and we'll size it properly.

Is my riding gear covered?

Not automatically. Your helmet, jacket, gloves, boots and armor are not part of the motorcycle, so the bike's physical damage coverage does not replace them.

A full kit can run into four figures, and one get-off can destroy all of it at once. Ask us whether safety apparel coverage can be added to your policy.

Is my passenger covered?

Check, don't assume. Guest passenger liability covers the person on the back, the one most likely to be seriously hurt in your crash.

Some policies include it, some don't. If you ever carry anyone, make sure yours does.

Does my motorcycle policy cover hurricane and flood damage?

Only if you carry comprehensive. Comprehensive is the coverage for flood water, wind, falling limbs and theft, and a liability-only policy pays nothing when a storm takes out the bike. Ida in 2021 and Francine in 2024 both flooded garages and sheds across Terrebonne and Lafourche.

Keep comprehensive in force all year, since there's no off-season here. When a storm is coming, move the bike to higher ground or a sturdy building early, and photograph it and your mods before you leave.

Do scooters and mopeds need insurance too?

If it is registered for the road, it needs liability coverage, and small displacement does not shrink the liability: a small scooter can put a pedestrian in the hospital just as a big bike can.

Tell us what you ride, whether it's a scooter for getting around campus in Lafayette or a touring bike, and we'll write it correctly.
