So when we talk about Houma, we're not reading off a map. We know what hurricane season means for Terrebonne and Lafourche, what Ida and Francine did to homes across the parish, and why a flood policy matters here even when your lender doesn't require one.

The approach is simple: Local coverage, local service. We explain your options, help you pick the coverage that fits and stay with you as your needs change, from your first policy to your next storm season. Meet David.

Coverage we write for Houma families and businesses. Local coverage, local service.

Personal and business coverage, explained in plain English. Pick a line to learn more, or request a quote for anything below. Coverage is subject to terms, conditions and availability.

Already insured? Let's look at what you have.

Bring in your declarations pages or text us a photo. We'll check your limits, your named-storm deductible and any flood gaps, and point out discounts you may qualify for, such as the multi-policy bundle. Discounts vary and are subject to terms, conditions and availability. No pressure either way.

Insuring a Houma Home and Family

What we look at first in Houma. Wind, water and the road.

Every policy is different, but the same few questions come up again and again with Terrebonne and Lafourche customers. Here's how we think about them.

Hurricane season and named-storm deductibles

Hurricane Ida made landfall near Port Fourchon on Aug. 29, 2021 and hit Houma hard. Hurricane Francine made landfall in Terrebonne Parish in September 2024. Coastal homeowners policies commonly carry a separate percentage deductible for named storms or hurricanes, for example 2% or 5% of the dwelling limit. Read your declarations page so you know your number before the next storm. If you're replacing a roof, the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program offers grants of up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof, and FORTIFIED roofs earn required discounts on the hurricane portion of your premium. Amounts vary by insurer and region. If you can't find coverage elsewhere, Louisiana Citizens is the state's insurer of last resort.

Flood zones in Terrebonne and Lafourche

Much of Terrebonne Parish is in FEMA high-risk flood zones. Standard home, condo and renters policies exclude flood, so it needs its own flood policy. You can buy a government-run NFIP policy through an insurance agent. NFIP limits are $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents, and there's a 30-day waiting period in most cases. Check your zone instead of assuming, and don't wait for a storm to form. The same applies to condo and renters policies.

Driving in and out of Houma

Louisiana's auto minimum is 15/30/25: $15,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 of property damage. Your insurer must offer uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits, and turning it down takes a signed UM rejection form. Under the 2025 reforms, the No Pay, No Play threshold was raised to $100,000, and a driver found 51% or more at fault can't recover damages. Plenty of Houma drivers commute to Thibodaux, Morgan City and beyond, and the minimum often doesn't go far after a serious crash. We'll show you what higher limits and UM coverage may cost before you decide. If you have a home and assets to protect, an umbrella policy adds another layer on top.

Houma businesses and rental owners

David is a small business owner himself. We write business insurance for local small businesses and landlords and hosts coverage for rental homes, so your personal and business policies can sit with one local office. Coverage is subject to terms, conditions and availability.

Where is your Houma office, and when are you open?

Our Houma office is at 6658 W Park Ave, Houma, LA 70364, in the Bayou Cane area across from the Lisa Park subdivision and Landmark Furniture. We're open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Central. Weekend appointments and after-hours appointments are available.

Who will I work with at the Houma office?

Ohlmeyer Insurance is a local insurance agency led by David Ohlmeyer Jr. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Nicholls State University and has 25+ years in the community.

You get local coverage with local service from people who live here.

What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in Louisiana?

Louisiana requires liability limits of at least 15/30/25: $15,000 for bodily injury per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. Your insurer must offer uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage at your liability limits, and rejecting it or choosing lower limits takes a signed Louisiana Department of Insurance form.

Under the 2025 reforms, the No Pay, No Play threshold was raised to $100,000, and a driver found 51% or more at fault can't recover damages. The minimum can run out fast after a serious crash, so we'll show you what higher limits cost.

What is a named-storm deductible on a Houma home policy?

Coastal home policies commonly carry a separate percentage deductible for named storms or hurricanes, for example 2% or 5% of the dwelling limit. On a home insured for $250,000, a 2% deductible is $5,000. Check your declarations page before hurricane season.

If you're planning a new roof, ask about the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program, which offers grants of up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof.

Do I need flood insurance in Houma?

Very likely. Much of Terrebonne Parish is in FEMA high-risk flood zones, and standard home, condo and renters policies exclude flood. You can buy a government-run NFIP flood policy through an insurance agent.

NFIP limits are $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents, and there's a 30-day waiting period in most cases, so buy well before a storm is in the Gulf.

I rent or own a condo in Houma. What coverage do I need?

Renters insurance covers your belongings, your personal liability and extra living costs if the place becomes unlivable. Your landlord's policy covers the building, not your things.

Condo owners need a unit-owner policy that fills the gaps between you and the association's master policy. Neither covers flood, so ask about an NFIP contents policy too.

How much life insurance do I need?

Enough to cover what the people who depend on you would need: the mortgage, debts, everyday living costs and goals like college. There's no single right number, and we'll walk through it with you.

We offer term, whole and universal life. Life insurance may be offered and issued by third-party companies.

Do you insure Houma businesses and rental properties?

Yes. David is a small business owner himself, and we write small business insurance for local small businesses plus landlords and hosts coverage for rental properties.

Coverage is subject to terms, conditions and availability.
