Boat, RV & ATV Insurance in Louisiana

Your auto policy follows the trailer only while it's hitched. Your homeowners policy stops at the bayou's edge. Fishing boats, pontoons, campers and four-wheelers need their own coverage, from a local insurance agent who knows hurricane season.

The Quick Answer

The two policies you already own do less than you think. Your auto policy generally extends liability to a towed trailer only while it is hitched, and never covers the trailer's own damage. Your homeowners policy often extends only to small, low-powered craft and may not answer a liability claim on the water. Fishing boats, bay boats, bass boats, pontoons and personal watercraft on the bayous of Terrebonne and Lafourche, the Atchafalaya Basin and the Gulf need their own policy, and marinas and lenders commonly set requirements. A motorhome is a registered vehicle, so Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies. ATVs for hunting season need their own coverage too. Physical damage coverage can include hurricane, wind and flood water damage, and every owner should have a storm plan before June. Louisiana Boat, RV & ATV Insurance, The Short Version

Two policies you already own. Neither one covers the toys.

Here is the assumption that costs owners the most: "the truck's insured and the house is insured, so the stuff they tow and store must be too." Your auto policy generally lends its liability to a trailer only while it is hitched, and never covers the trailer's own damage. Your homeowners policy may extend a little coverage to small, low-powered craft, and usually stops at anything with a real motor, especially once it leaves the driveway.

So the toys get their own coverage, matched to what they are. A fishing boat or pontoon working the marsh out of Cocodrie, Dulac or Leeville, the Atchafalaya Basin or a run past Port Fourchon needs its own policy, often shaped by the marina and the lender. Ask about fuel spill and wreck removal while you're at it. A motorhome is a vehicle and a house at once: Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies because it is registered like a car, and physical damage matters because it is a major asset. A travel trailer or fifth wheel needs its own physical damage coverage for storms, theft from the storage lot and fire. And the ATV that hauls the deer stand every fall needs coverage of its own.

South Louisiana weather works every season. Summer brings afternoon storms and street flooding, and hurricane season runs from June into November. Ida in 2021 and Francine in 2024 both left boats on their sides and campers crushed across the Bayou Region. That is why physical damage coverage and a written storm plan are the two things we talk about first.

Tell us what is in the driveway, the storage lot, the boat shed and the camp. We are a local insurance agency, and we offer boat, ATV, and RV & motorhome coverage alongside your auto and home. Combining policies may lower what you pay. Discounts vary and are subject to terms, conditions and availability.

What actually covers the toys. And what quietly doesn't.

Different machines, different rules. The pattern is the same: the required part is small and the useful part is what you choose. Coverage options vary, so ask what's available for yours.

Required by law
15/30/25

Motorhome Liability

A motorhome is a registered vehicle, so Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies. Worth going well above it: a big rig at highway speed on I-10 or US-90 does not produce small accidents, and the state minimum was not built with that kind of weight in mind.

Physical Damage

Boat & RV Physical Damage

Repairs or replaces the boat, the motor, the camper or the rig. Required by any lender on a financed boat or RV, and the coverage that can answer wind, flood water, theft or a falling limb. A boat or camper parked outside through hurricane season takes its chances without it.

On the water
Liability

Boat Liability

Pays when your boat injures someone or damages their property: the wake that swamps a smaller boat, the collision at the launch, the guest hurt on board. Ask about medical payments for passengers and uninsured boater coverage too.

Hunting season
ATV

ATVs & Side-by-Sides

The four-wheeler that hauls the stand, the feeder and the cooler out to the lease. Homeowners coverage generally stops once it leaves your property. ATV coverage can include liability, theft and physical damage, so ask about it before opening day.

Total Loss

How A Total Loss Is Paid

Boats and RVs depreciate fast. Some policies pay depreciated value, and some options can pay more on eligible newer rigs. Ask how yours values a total loss before you need to know, especially if you still owe on it.

Storm Plan

Hurricane Haul-Out Plan

Decide where the boat and the camper go before a storm is in the Gulf: hauled out, trailered to higher ground, or tied down in a sturdy building. Keep physical damage coverage in force all year, and ask us how your policy handles a named storm.

Not covered
Unhitched

Your Trailer, Most Of The Time

Auto liability follows the trailer while hitched and covers only what you damage. The trailer itself, its contents, and every hour it spends parked or stored are not your auto policy's problem. This is the most common gap we find.

Not covered
Motorized

Your Boat, On Homeowners

Homeowners may extend to small, low-powered craft, typically with length and horsepower caps, often only on your property. A pirogue, maybe. A bay boat or anything with a real engine, usually no, and it may not answer a liability claim out in Terrebonne Bay at all.

Cleanup

Fuel Spill & Wreck Removal

If your boat sinks, removing it can be your bill. If fuel escapes, the cleanup can be your bill. Neither has anything to do with what the boat was worth, so a total loss can still cost you. Ask whether your policy can include both.

Got a boat or trailer you assumed was covered?

Most people do. It takes about five minutes to find out what your auto and home policies actually do for it, and it is free either way.

RVs, Motorhomes & Trailers

An RV is a vehicle and a house. Insure both halves.

That dual nature is the whole reason RV insurance is its own product rather than a line on your auto policy. Get the vehicle half wrong and you are underinsured on the road. Get the house half wrong and you are underinsured everywhere you park.

Motorhomes versus trailers

A motorhome is a registered motor vehicle, so Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies, the same as a car: $15,000 bodily injury per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Insurers must offer uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits, and turning it down takes a signed form. Given the size and weight of a motorhome, the state minimum is a starting point, not a plan.

A travel trailer or fifth wheel is not self-propelled, and your tow vehicle's liability generally covers it while hitched. What people hear is "covered." What is true is "covered for one narrow thing during one narrow window." The trailer's own damage, its contents, and every unhitched hour need physical damage coverage of their own.

The parked half nobody prices

When the rig stops moving it becomes a residence, and residence risks show up: guests, dogs, awnings, hookups, and everything inside. Ask about vacation liability for the campsite and personal belongings coverage for the contents, and check the limits against what you actually travel with once you add electronics, fishing gear and tools.

If the rig is the residence, tell us. A policy built for weekends may not be built for full-time living, and that is a conversation to have before a claim, not after.

Camping season, and hurricane season

South Louisiana rigs get used most of the year, from weekends at Lake Fausse Pointe or Palmetto Island State Park to trips out of state. Plan for both halves. On the road, make sure liability limits are real. Parked, keep physical damage in force and tell us where the rig is kept. A covered storage building, a gravel lot in Gray and your own driveway in Bourg are not the same risk to an underwriter, and a camper in a low spot is a flood claim waiting for the next storm.

Boats, Pontoons, PWC & ATVs

Bayou mornings and Gulf runs. Insured like you mean it.

Few places have more water close to home. Bay boats and flats boats work the marsh out of Cocodrie, Dulac, Chauvin and Leeville. Bass boats run the Atchafalaya Basin out of Morgan City and Henderson. Pontoons and family boats spend summer weekends on Lake Boeuf and the bayous. Whatever you launch, it needs its own policy.

Who actually sets the requirements

Marinas commonly want proof of liability at a set limit before they rent you a slip, and some want to be named on the policy. Bring us the slip agreement and we will match it. Lenders require physical damage on a financed boat and will want to be the loss payee. Where you run can matter too, so tell us whether the boat stays inshore or heads offshore.

The other half has nothing to do with paperwork. If your boat sinks, wreck removal can be your responsibility. If fuel gets out, environmental cleanup can be your responsibility. Neither bill is capped by what the boat was worth, which is why "it's an old boat, it isn't worth insuring" is a mistake in reasoning rather than a budget decision. Ask whether your policy can include both.

Fishing boats, pontoons and family boats

A fishing boat carries real money in electronics, trolling motors and tackle. A pontoon is built for a crowd: kids, grandparents, friends and the dog. Either way, liability and medical payments deserve real limits. Ask about coverage for the trailer, the motor, and gear like electronics and fishing equipment, and about uninsured boater coverage in case the other boat has none.

Hurricane haul-out and storm plans

Every boat owner in Terrebonne and Lafourche knows the drill, but not everyone writes it down. Decide before June whether the boat gets hauled out and trailered north, moved into a storage building, or secured on a lift, and who moves it if you're working offshore when the storm comes. Some policies and marinas expect a storm plan, so ask us what yours requires and how it handles a named storm. Photograph the boat and its gear at the start of every season.

Jet skis, ATVs, and the rest of the camp

Personal watercraft deserve more respect than they get. They are fast, and they are often handed to a friend who has never operated one, which is a liability profile out of proportion to the price of the machine.

ATVs and side-by-sides need their own coverage too, especially in hunting season when they're hauling stands, feeders and coolers across the lease. Your homeowners policy generally will not respond once they leave the property, and sometimes not even on it. ATV coverage can include liability, theft and the trailer hauling them. The camp itself is a building, not a toy, so ask us about it separately, and remember that flood needs its own flood policy. Street bikes belong on a motorcycle policy.

Boat, RV & ATV questions. Straight answers.

Is RV insurance required in Louisiana?

For a motorhome, yes. It is a registered motor vehicle, so Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum liability applies: $15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Given how much a motorhome weighs, the minimum is a floor, not a plan.

Insurers must offer uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits, and turning it down takes a signed Louisiana Department of Insurance form. Towed trailers work differently. See the next question.

Doesn't my auto policy already cover my travel trailer?

Only for one narrow thing during one narrow window: while hitched, your tow vehicle's liability generally extends to the trailer.

The trailer's own physical damage, such as wind, flood water, theft from the storage lot or fire, is not covered by your auto policy, hitched or not. A travel trailer or fifth wheel needs its own coverage, and most owners find that out at claim time.

Does my homeowners policy cover my boat?

Barely. Homeowners policies often extend limited coverage to small, low-powered craft, typically with length and horsepower caps, and often only on your property.

A pirogue or kayak, maybe. A bay boat, a bass boat or a pontoon, usually no. The liability side is the bigger gap, because a homeowners policy may not answer a claim out on the water at all.

What can boat insurance include for bayou and Gulf fishing?

A boat policy can include physical damage to the hull, motor and trailer, liability for injuring someone or damaging their property on the water, and medical payments for the people on board.

Ask about uninsured boater coverage, fishing equipment, and fuel spill and wreck removal too. Tell us where you run, whether that's the marsh in Terrebonne and Lafourche, the Atchafalaya Basin or out past Port Fourchon, and we'll make sure the coverage fits how you use the boat.

Does boat or RV insurance cover hurricane and flood damage?

Physical damage coverage on a boat or RV can include wind, flood water and storm damage, minus your deductible. A liability-only policy pays nothing for any of it.

Read your declarations page for any storm-related deductible or requirements, and ask us how your policy handles a named storm. Ida in 2021 and Francine in 2024 both left damaged boats, campers and trailers across the Bayou Region.

What should my hurricane plan for a boat look like?

Decide before June where the boat goes when a storm is coming: hauled out and trailered to higher ground, moved to a storage building, or secured on a lift. Strip loose gear, photograph the boat and its equipment, and keep the policy and your marina agreement where you can find them.

Some policies and marinas expect a storm plan, so ask us what yours requires. The plan you write down in May is the one you can actually carry out with a storm in the Gulf.

Do marinas or lenders require boat insurance?

Often, yes. Marinas commonly want proof of liability at a set limit before they rent you a slip, and some want to be named on the policy. Lenders require physical damage coverage on a financed boat and want to be listed as loss payee.

Bring us the slip agreement or loan paperwork and we will match the policy to it.

What are fuel spill liability and wreck removal?

If your boat sinks or burns, you can be responsible for raising the wreck and cleaning up the fuel, and neither bill is small.

Ask us whether fuel spill liability and wreck removal coverage can be included on your policy. Neither is tied to what the boat was worth, so they matter even on an older boat.

What about ATVs and side-by-sides for hunting season?

They need their own coverage. Once an ATV leaves your property, your homeowners policy generally will not respond, and sometimes not even on it.

ATV coverage can include liability, theft and physical damage. Tell us what you ride and where, whether that's the lease, the camp or private land, and ask about bundling it with your auto and home.

What is vacation liability, and do I need it?

Your motorhome's auto-style liability is built for driving. Vacation liability is meant to fill the gap while you are parked and living in it: the campfire that spreads, or the guest who trips on the step at a state park campsite.

Ask whether your RV policy can include it and at what limit. If you spend real nights in the rig, carry it on purpose.

If my RV is totaled, what does the policy actually pay?

It depends on how the policy values the rig. Some pay depreciated value, and some options can pay more on eligible newer rigs.

Ask us how a total loss would be valued before you need to know. On a financed rig, that answer can decide whether the payout clears the loan.

Do I need insurance for a jet ski or personal watercraft?

Practically, yes. Lenders and many marinas require it, and personal watercraft are fast and often handed to a friend who has never operated one.

That is a liability profile out of proportion to the machine's price. Ask about coverage alongside your boat, RV and auto.
