Insuring a Lafayette Home and Family
What we look at first in Lafayette. Water, wind and the road.
Every household is different, but these are the questions that come up most with Acadiana customers.
The August 2016 flood and flood coverage
Lafayette flooded heavily in August 2016. Standard home, condo and renters policies don't cover flood, so it needs its own flood policy. You can buy a government-run NFIP policy through an insurance agent. NFIP limits are $250,000 for the building and $100,000 for contents, and there's a 30-day waiting period in most cases. Check your zone instead of assuming. The same goes for condo and renters policies.
Laura, Delta and named-storm deductibles
Hurricanes Laura and Delta both affected Acadiana in 2020. South Louisiana home policies can carry a separate percentage deductible for named storms or hurricanes, for example 2% or 5% of the dwelling limit. Know your number before hurricane season. If you're replacing a roof, the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program offers grants of up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof, and FORTIFIED roofs earn required discounts on the hurricane portion of your premium. Amounts vary by insurer and region. If you can't find coverage elsewhere, Louisiana Citizens is the state's insurer of last resort.
Insure to rebuild cost, not the sale price
Your dwelling limit should equal what it would cost to rebuild the house today, not the market value or what you paid. We work through the number with you on every home policy, so it doesn't quietly drift below what a rebuild would take.
Commuters, teen drivers and the umbrella
Louisiana's auto minimum is 15/30/25: $15,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 of property damage. Your insurer must offer uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits, and turning it down takes a signed UM rejection form. Under the 2025 reforms, the No Pay, No Play threshold was raised to $100,000, and a driver found 51% or more at fault can't recover damages. With daily commutes on I-10, I-49 and US-90, and new drivers joining the policy, the minimum rarely matches what a Lafayette household has at stake. Higher auto limits plus an umbrella policy are worth pricing together.
